Understanding Google Analytics 4 UTM Parameters

Urchin Tracking Module (UTM) parameters are five query tags added to the end of a destination URL to help analytics suites (Google Analytics 4, Mixpanel, Amplitude, Adobe Analytics) attribute traffic accurately across marketing campaigns:

utm_source
Identifies which platform or site referred the traffic (e.g. google, facebook, substack, linkedin).
utm_medium
Specifies the marketing channel or transmission format (e.g. cpc, email, social, affiliate).
utm_campaign
The individual campaign or strategic initiative (e.g. q4_holiday_sale, retargeting_usa).
utm_term & content
Optional tags for paid keywords (utm_term) and A/B test variations or creative elements (utm_content).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is lowercase formatting critical for UTM codes?

Google Analytics 4 is strictly case-sensitive. If you tag one link with utm_source=Facebook and another with utm_source=facebook, GA4 will treat them as two completely separate referral sources. Standardizing on all-lowercase prevents split data reporting.

Do UTM tags harm SEO or create duplicate content?

No, as long as your destination pages contain a self-referencing canonical tag (e.g. <link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/page/">). Googlebot uses the canonical URL to consolidate ranking equity and ignores tracking query parameters.

Can UTM parameters track internal links on my own website?

No! You should never use UTM codes on internal links (e.g. from your homepage to your pricing page). Doing so resets the user session in GA4 and overwrites the original referral source that first brought the visitor to your site.
